Hey Ken,

Got up this AM and it was 8 degrees (Asheville). It's now up to 13 degrees (9:55A), boy am I glad I moved south to get away from those nasty NJ winters.

Dan C.

PS...Glad I put a heater in the shop.

Some people think the hot water thing ain't so, but the fact is, when the water is heated, the minerals fall out. That's why you're supposed to drain off your water heater every year to get rid of the sediment. The minerals in the water slow down the freezing process. Some builders even put the ice maker line to the fridge on the hot water pipe.
But it's STILL cold!

Dont know what it got down to here but it was 19 when I left work last night. I was thinking the whole time I was walking to the car that I sure was glad I no longer had an outside job.

C'mon Dan, I came from NJ also, you may get some cold and snow down here (I don't get much snow in Johnston county), but at least the snow doesn't turn brown immediately.

Since scientists can't explain why, under some circumstances, hot water freezes faster than cool water I am surprised to see a definite explanation here. And none of the theories I have read involve minerals.

If builders are hooking ice makers to hot water heaters they are making a mistake. The increased dissolved metals in the hot water heater generally make hot water an undesirable drinking source. I don't know of any water specialist who would advise this.

I was a chemist in a former life. The subtle difference in the time required to freeze hot water is very small, but a reality. It has to do with the energy difference between the surrounding air (freezer) and the object (water in ice trays).

We did the math in P-chem and its a few minutes quicker. I myself put hot water in ice trays for awhile in my arrogant youth mostly to annoy my mother.

One thing I did learn in Chemistry class that I find usefull in the kitchen is in making tea. If you pour the hot water in the jug and then fill it with cold water, the water will cycle enough trying to reach equilibrium that you don't have to bother stiring the jug!

Again another arrogant thing I used to do to annoy my mother, who by the way, now doesn't have to stir her Tea after tasting mine for a few years she relented!

I musta picked that up about the hot water freezin' faster from the science column of the National Enquirer! I do know people tell me their ice makers make clearer ice when it's hooked that way. It could have something to do with dissolved air in the water. Let's wait 'til it gets REAL cold & give it a try.

Tell me you're making ice tea and not English style hot tea, in a tea pot! please tell me that...... Warming the pot adding boiling water, wait, stir, wait, pour onto the milk.... it's the way it has to be done.....

How to make real English hot tea:

- Put cold water in plastic jug (about 2 cups)
- Put jug in microwave, bring to a boil
- Add one teabag
- Add cold water to jug (about 2 gallons)
- Let sit for a couple of hours
- Remove teabag
- Put jug in fridge
- Next day, pour into Styrofoam cup
- Microwave until hot
- Add non-dairy coffee creamer (dry milk if you want to get fancy)
- Serve with crumpets
