Instead of subjecting everyone to endless pictures of my vacation. I took these pictures specifically for this post. They are pictures of the Ocracoke lighthouse, located along the Outer banks of NC, on the island of Ocracoke. Please pay special attention to the trees. The first person to identify the 2 species of trees that are around the lighthouse, AND how long it is estimated they have been there will win a grab bag of pen blanks.
I'm thinking of handicapping DaveO, but I'll let him play too

First up, Name this tree. Here is 2 pictures of the tree.

Another view of the same tree (the rightmost tree):

Now, the 2nd species. All of these are the same type of tree.

Here is a picture of the tops of said trees

here's something I thought that turned out rather nice, has nothing to do with the contest.

Oh, I took these pictures at a respectable resolution, so you can really zoom in if you wish.

The second batch are oak, I think red oak because of green moss on the trunks but can't be sure.

I would agree with Jeff on the first being a Cedar, but I think that the second is Live Oak (and I think that is classified as a White Oak). The Ocracoke lighthouse was build around 1823 so I am going to guess that the trees are in the 170-180 year old range.
Beautiful pics BTW

Dave

Dave don't live oaks have those funky strings hanging from them? And oh if those oak trees smell like puke then there red

Age of the knarly cedar guessing around 100 to 120 same for the oaks.

Spanish Moss can be found on many trees, not just Live Oaks, but it is very characteristic of them. I think that in a harsh windy environment like the Outer Banks Spanish Moss would have a hard time staying on the trees, and that might be why you don't see any. Or they just cleaned up real good for Clay's pics

Well...I'm going to have to agree with DaveO on the trees...one because he is always naming the trees on this site in latin...two because I agree with him. The first one (cedar) looks just like the knarly cedar trees I saw this winter while skiing atop Heavenly...only they were very skinny an didn't have as much foliage. Given the size of these, I'm going to guess 300 years. The same for the live oak.

cheers,
Chris

Oh...also...welcome back, Clay! I'm a bit disappointed we didn't hook up while you were in Charlotte, but I'm glad that you're back and had a good vacation! And yes, that is a nice picture of the sea gulls with the waves!

Cheers,
Chris

Great pictures! I'm jealous because I haven't been down there in several years - used to make it at least once/yr. I should know the answers to your questions - but I barely remember yesterday. Glad you guys had a blast and got home safely.

I agree with Jeff and Dave. The first one is Cedar. I need to go back and look at the 2nd tree.

Well... it looks like we have some winners. Between Dave, Chris and Jeff, they have it. The first tree is a cedar tree, the second batch of trees are Live Oaks. They are all bent over due to the wind. The trees have been estimated to be there since the mid 1700s, before the lighthouse was built.

I'll get my grab bag(s) together. Guys PM me your address. Jeff.. if you don't want some (more) blanks, I understand Just let me know.
