I took these pictures specifically for this post. They are pictures of the Ocracoke lighthouse, located along the Outer banks of NC, on the island of Ocracoke. Please pay special attention to the trees. The first person to identify the 2 species of trees that are around the lighthouse, AND how long it is estimated they have been there will win a grab bag of pen blanks.
I'm thinking of handicapping DaveO, but I'll let him play too
First up, Name this tree. Here is 2 pictures of the tree.
Another view of the same tree (the rightmost tree):
Now, the 2nd species. All of these are the same type of tree.
Here is a picture of the tops of said trees
here's something I thought that turned out rather nice, has nothing to do with the contest.

The Ocracoke lighthouse was build around 1823 so I am going to guess that the trees are in the 170-180 year old range.
Beautiful pics BTW

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Age of the knarly cedar guessing around 100 to 120 same for the oaks.

Or they just cleaned up real good for Clay's pics

The first one (cedar) looks just like the knarly cedar trees I saw this winter while skiing atop Heavenly...only they were very skinny an didn't have as much foliage. Given the size of these, I'm going to guess 300 years. The same for the live oak.
cheers,
Chris

I'm a bit disappointed we didn't hook up while you were in Charlotte, but I'm glad that you're back and had a good vacation! And yes, that is a nice picture of the sea gulls with the waves!
Cheers,
Chris

I'm jealous because I haven't been down there in several years - used to make it at least once/yr. I should know the answers to your questions - but I barely remember yesterday. Glad you guys had a blast and got home safely.

Between Dave, Chris and Jeff, they have it. The first tree is a cedar tree, the second batch of trees are Live Oaks. They are all bent over due to the wind. The trees have been estimated to be there since the mid 1700s, before the lighthouse was built.
I'll get my grab bag(s) together. Guys PM me your address. Jeff.. if you don't want some (more) blanks, I understand Just let me know.
