Name: Bryan City: Burlington State: NC County: Alamance Join Date: Apr 2006 Avg Visit Freq/Week = 6.84 over 180 days | I have 2 problems. I have picked up from somewhere one of those annoying popups that says " Your computer has been infected by an unkown Trojan (bla bla bla) click ok to download this spyware removal tool". I'm pretty sure I dont want to click ok and get infected by some thing else, but its very annoying, has slowed my system down and I cant get rid of it.
Here's what I have done.
-Ran norton antivirus, and didn't find anything.
-Ran Spybot search and destroy and didn't find anything.
-Downloaded and ran Adaware, found alot but didn't get rid of the problem.
-Deleted all interenet files and cookies.
-Have tried to do a system restore and after the computer goes through the motions I get a System restore incomlete no changes were made message, which is the 2nd problem. I have tried this 3 times picking diff dates.
I have windows XP home and have in the past solved a nasty problem using system restore but wont work this time. How about it any help will be appreciated.

Another idea, instead of Norton (not my personal favorite), try the FREE antivirus software called Avast! Home (free for personal use - http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html). It is equally as good, if not better than Norton (and the more evil McAfee)
You may also want to try the free online scan by BitDefender. http://www.bitdefender.com
If you can get us a screenshot, I bet we can figure it out. |

The link to download is on the top right. Hijackthis is somewhat different from most anti-spyware/ virus programs in that it's a "cooperative" system, where people flag software and upload the info to the site.
Run the program and paste the logfile into the web page to have it analyzed. It will flag anything running on your computer as safe, virus, suspicious etc. I've used it with great success on many occasions, but it's more of a DIY thing as opposed to an automated solution.
Let me know if you need any help with it.

I would suggest that when a window of this type pops, close it from the task bar at the bottom of the screen and NOT from the red 'X' in the upper right corner of the pop up window. In 'C' it takes one line of code to rewrite the action taken for pushing the 'X'.
If all else fails, some outfits, like Symantec, offer a premium service to clean out and tune up your system. The cost is around $100 and is effective.
