I realized something today thinking about my destroyed fretboard. I can use a fretboard calculator at Stewart-MacDonald, here:
Stewart-MacDonald: Fret scales

to figure out the placement of every fret.

Most 22 fret guitar scales would even fit on a piece of legal paper.

Can I get my computer to accurately print a line at different points from an excel sheet? If I could, I would be able to print out a 20" scale for my daughter, tape it to a 1/4" thick board, and slot it in a simple miter box by sawing right through the paper!

Problem is I haven't a clue what program would let me do that or if a laser jet is that accurate. Anyone know?

Thanks,

Todd

If it were me, I'd draw it in sketchup (in 2D only) and then print it. If you haven't tried sketchup yet, you're missing out! It's a free download through Google. Just do a search through google to find it. Try out the tutorials that are available. It's very simple to learn.

Should be easy with a CAD program to lay out the lines at the correct spacing and length. Even if the fretboard is not a rectangle (can't they be a long trapezoid?), it still should be straightforward. PM me the parameters and tomorrow I'll see if I can draw something in TurboCAD that prints out to correct scale on my laser printer. If it works, I can create a PDF file for you to print.

Rob, that would be awsome. I can put the numbers in an excel file. Do you want the distances from a zero line. And do you need anything else?
Thanks,
Todd

I'll send you a PM with my e-mail address -- EXCEL file would be fine with data from start point... Rob

Todd, I've got your Fretboard lines drawn on 8-1/2 x 11" paper -- because your calculations yielded a perfect round number at 10.0000 inches, I split the 15.0000 inch long piece in two parts at the 10 inch position -- you can "cut and paste" the sheet to get the full length. I made 8-10 copies and took them with me to Greensboro today, but found out from your post yesterday that you were not going to be there. PM or e-mail me your address and I'll stick them in the mail to you.

Rob

PS -- before I mail them, please confirm that 1" length for each fret line is long enough -- I can easily make them longer if you need them larger.
