Ok I got spyware doc, spysweeper, ad aware and norton internet security and they dont help. For some reason my problem is back. For a good minute my computer wont open shortcuts at start up. This includes internet explorer and start menu shortcuts.

I might just format again and this time have spyware doc loaded before I connect to the web. I noticed I got lots of pop ups telling me I need to download software to fix my registry, right that the first bootup from a format. D@mn idiots will never let up with viruses and spyware.

Just a suggestion, if you don't already do it. Backup data only. Then do a reinstall of all operating systems and application programs. What I ended up doing was installing Norton Ghost after I reformatted my drive, installed operating software and application software. (Does require a second drive - either logical or physical.) At that point I take an image because I KNOW no one has gotten to my machine.

Next step is to connect to the internet and download operating system and application updates - ONLY. I visit absolutely none of my "favorite" sites. Then I make another image. From that point on I restore data, internet favorites, etc. If everything is working, I then make one more image.

By the time I am done I have two images: One of the pristine, updated version of my PC and application programs - just in case I need to rebuild the pc again! The second contains the updated programs and data. I overlay that one periodically.

It is a pain in the butt, however, it gives me the peace of mind that I can recover my pc with a lesser amount of work should the case arise. Each time I create an image, it takes about 10 - 15 minutes. A LOT less time than what would be needed if I needed to reload everything do to those d@mn viruses to which you referred.

ghost is good. used to be the system we used for all Dell restore services. I keep contemplating the idea of buying it for my business, though so many of the computer manufacturers are including hidden partitions with restore services for the RTO industry now, that it would almost be excess. kind of just waiting for our other service expenses to go down one month, then buying with 'leftover' money at EOM.

Hah Ive done that on an older computer, I threw the cd rom out of alignment. I also put a stick of ram in the wrong way once too. Cracked the motherboard and the circuits that powered the fans. So when I turned it on, it burnt up all my chips, smelled horrible too.

I finally found the problem I was having with the start up lock. I had my backup computer hooked up to my main comps network card but I didnt set up the network yet. I simply unplugged it and the main comp doesnt try to search for the backup comp resulting in a normal startup! woohoo
