Mental note to self: Don’t load 18 and 20’ logs on a 14’ trailer. Had to get three people to stand on the tongue, just to get the hitch latched on the ball. The trailer wagged behind the truck worse than my dog’s tail when he’s happy to see me. Maximum speed without excessive trailer wagging was 40MPH. It’s not that I’m overloaded; cedar is pretty light, especially since these logs have been hanging around a few years, it’s that the majority of the weight is behind the rear axle. I’m glad this load was only 10 miles away and was all back roads home.

Bad dog!

Had a similiar experience with ton of gravel on my 4x8 trailer. Unbalanced load (to rear) started wagging at 35 mph and jerked rear of SUV side to side with tires squealing You can't brake, just hold on to steering wheel and pray until speed drops below threshold.

With empathy,
Roger

Try a ton of sand in a little S-10 pick-up....
Over 30mph and the front wheels got light and danced around the road, I found it very funny.... the wife did not!!!!

Jeff,

Sorry you had a tough time hauling the cedar back home... but it looks like a nice haul. Have you split any of the logs yet? Any idea what the wood looks like? Any plans for all that cedar?

Ray

Yep - it's going into my ball and chain project, a deck around our 30' above ground swimming pool. I've sliced up quite a few cedars already and I got quite a few more to go. I know this sounds strange, but I long for the day when I have something else on the mill, cept red cedar.

Anyways, this is how NOT to load logs on a trailer...

Hehehehehe. At least you didn't have 600 miles to go and a blown tire.

I've already gotten another call on another tree up in NJ. I guess I'll be making a stop by the trailer dealer for an upgrade to a tandem axil version. How can I say no to a very large cherry tree.
