Cedar deck work in process - ran out of 4/4's. Was supposed to go and pick up some more logs today, but the guy never called me back As you can tell I work at the speed of lightning

Looking good Jeff . Let me know after you mill those logs if you get any cedar pen blanks from them.

That's really neat - how are you doing the curves?

Monty - A carpenter friend of mine showed me how to do this about 5 years ago, while building a half pipe for one of my son's (skate boarding ramp). Saw kerfs on the back side of the board and it'll bend right around, the tighter the radius the closer the kerfs and he said not to go too deep with the kerfs around 1/2 the thickness of the board. Since the pool is 30' round, the inner inner band is kerfed about every 6" and the inner outer about every 8". The inner 4x4's are every 4' and both in inner inner and inner outer are bolted to each 4x4 with some big 1/2 x 7" bolts. The joists are siting on a kerfed 2x2 which is toe nailed to the bottom of the inner outter band, the joists are then toenailed into the inner outer band.

Hope the picture helps, cause it sure is hard for me to explain in words.

Thanks

Well, Monty beat me to my question. That's a great way of doing the curved pool edge. Most deck builders I know get as close as they can with straight members, and then let the deck boards run over to be trimmed to the curve. The way your doing it is more structurally sound and shows a great attention to detail
Can't wait to see it finished.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

That's going to be an awesome deck when it's done.

Fabulous work, Jeff!!!!!!!!!

I cannot even begin to guess how many board feet of cedar it will take to complete. Are you going all the way round the 30' pool?

Awesome!

Looking good Jeff!
No need to be in a hurry now, unless the pool is heated
When those water temps get in the 60s, it's time to close it for the year

FWIW, I've found the solar blankets (bubble wrap) very effective for extending the pool season.

Thanks everyone for your replies and encouragement. Milling cedar is a pita with all the face defect and heart rot in the larger logs, it takes a lot of logs to get enough building materials for the deck. Theres a few stacks of 2x around the pool waiting for 4x4's. I've estimated I've milled about 50 cedar logs and have at least that much more to go. I've already exausted one source and am having a problem hooking up with my 2nd.

I'm kinda courious what's the going rate for cedar construction materials or can you even buy it anymore?

Just found the answer to my question here are cedar prices - phew talking about expensive

2x4-8 - $5.17
2x6-8 - $9.41
2x8 - not listed
5/4x6-8 (deck plank) $6.30
4x4-8 - $16.54
6x6 - not listed

Composite, Vinyl & Cedar Decking at Great Prices

Thanks again...

Jeff,

The deck structure is coming along very nicely. That is a heck of a lot of work and lumber. The family is going to love you for this one.
