Question

Not the fill/float mechanism, nor the flapper or seals, but the internal piping of the toilet. I have a toilet that just won't flush right. Everything is working as it should fill and flapper-wise. I have checked the drain path beneath the toilet and it drains just fine. But the toilet still won't flush. It fills up with water like it's clogged. It will slowly drain back down to normal but there is no "cyclonic" flushing action that could carry waste away.
I would hate to go out and get a new toilet (cutting into my tool/wood budget) and find that there is an easy fix.

Dave

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

There's a special auger for toilet's, it's "U" shaped and will telescropes into the toilet. I would try one of these first. If it not leaking onto the floor its "MOST LIKELY" OK.

Dave, there is almost certainly something in the gooseneck of the toilet . Shampoo bottle cap, piece of soap , toothbrush ......the list is endless. As an apartment maint man for 20 yrs, you would not believe some of the things I have removed from toilets
the toilet auger should fix it . Wish you were closer ...I have one

If all drain passages are clear, one other possibility is a plugged vent. The way you described the problem, it sure could be a vent problem.

Cheers,
Bernhard

Could be a barbie doll in the goose neck? With all the kids I raised, you would be amazed what the toilet auger has found. Get yourself a good one your gonna need it

Yep, I think I'll have to try and auger the beast out of it. I couldn't understand how the inner workings of a toilet could malfunction, but I can't get the water to drain from point A to B within the toilet itself.
As Scott so eloquently stated...you folks really know your s#*t

If it is a flat lid like seals a canning jar (which we experienced one time) the auger may not move it. We had to have a plumber remove the toilet and actually dump the lid out.

Hope you can auger yours to new function.

Jerry

The first thing I check on a service call is the water level in the tank. Remove the lid and look on the right rear wall of the tank. There is usually a line indicating where the tank is supposed to fill to. If water isn't up to the line, toilet won't flush properly. If you have HEAVY mineral build up under the rim of the bowl, this too can affect flushing action. Seldom is this a problem though. Plumbing- where a flush beats a full house.

About the only place to get one around here is the BORG. they have two kinds one is more expensive better built (and longer) than the other. Spring for the more expensive (longer) auger. It'll actually get past the goose neck and down into the pipe a little and is strong enough to bust through the toughest 5h1t and yank out nasty barbie dolls with out much trouble...

Dave,

When my FIL(plumber for 45 yrs.) was visiting and working on my toilet I asked him that exact question ( I had to know) and his answer was yes. During his career he had a few toilets that he had changed everything on and still couldn't get to work, when he changed out the toilet itself everything worked.

Hope that helps.

Jimmy

Dave is that the same toilet that was giving trouble in your other thread? If so you probably have a problem on down the line. Are any of the sinks having trouble draining? If so you may need the septic tank pumped. Good luck I know how it is to have plumbing problems.
