Well I have been very busy with my garage remmodel and now I am starting on the side yard. The crowning touch will be a 7-8 person hot tub. After alot of searching and soaking I have narrowed down to Clearwater Spas. My Uncle has had one for several years and loves it. I just was not very excited about the Sundance and Hot Spring offerings in my area. Do any of you all have a spa? I am all new to this so any advise would be great. It comes with an Ozoneator but the salt purification is an extra. I just do not know if it is worth the extra $300. Thanks

Hi guys,

After 7 years of owning my hot tub which is bromine only, I can tell you that bromine is tough on the plumbing and the mechanicals.

The basic principal of chlorine, bromine or any other free ion is that it has an affinity to attack any substance it encounters. This is exactly why it is added to the hot tub water - dirt or organics in the mix that are not wanted are broken down. When there is nothing to attack, or the concentration of ion to water gets too high, the ion begins to go for other things, like your plumbing, heater, tub cover, valve assemblies and gaskets. Over time, as little as a year if you don't watch your chemicals, you may be looking at some expensive repairs.

With that said, anything that can be done to reduce the level of bromine or chlorine required is a worthwhile investement. From my experience, having a tech make only a short trip to your home will cost you at least $85 + parts which can be in the 200 - 1200 range.

In short, an extra $300 is well worth the investement.
Hope this helps,

David

Hi All -
I also have owned a hot tub for about 15 years and they are great! One note, several years ago I switched over to a silver based sanitizer called nature 2. It toally replaces bromine or chlorine based disinfectants, only need s to be tended to about every 4 months and works great! No smell whatsoever and much easier on all spa parts. If you order it online from The Spa Depot: Hot Tubs, Spas, Hot Tub Covers, Spas Chemicals it is about half the price of local stores.

As for the spa, consider looking at the BAJA line from B&G builders on North Guess Road in Durham. Great spa and excellent customer service.

Enjoy!!
Best
Wayne

Thanks guys. The system they install is the Genesis salt system Brominator. I am just trying to get a handle on how all this stuff works together. Thanks for the info on the silver canister, it is what my uncle uses because his wife has such sensitive skin. We are going to get the Orlando http://www.clearwaterspas.com/resort-series.htm or the Spyglass http://www.clearwaterspas.com/beach1.htm The Orlando is two thousand more but over 15 years the cost is not that much.

I had a hot tub for a long time and my wife also had sensitive skin (and sensitive nose to chlorine/bromine). I had an Ozonator and I used the Baqua Spa chemical system. I never had a chlorine smell and our skin never dried out. I used the tub nightly .
They have info on line and a lot of the stores carry the products here in the area.
