cleaning up around the house this morning, I found our stash of batteries, including a brand new 9volt that I need for my multi-meter, so I stuck it in my pocket. continuing to clean up, I found various little bits, adapters and coins, which I proceded to toss in the same pocket. then I sat down for lunch, and then also here at the computer to check up on North Carolina Woodworker before going to see Skysharks. I noticed a warm sensation in my pocket, in fact, it was quite hot. A little confused, I reached into my pocket to pull out a HOT 9 volt battery that had had a likewise HOT penny shorting the terminals. My dad (a lifelong physics teacher) would be amused at how much I have forgotten about circuits

guess after the battery cools down, I'll check it to see if I can put in the meter

Once the battery cools, you'll probably need to clean the copper off of it, which is done as follows:

1) Hold the battery by the base, pointing the terminals up
2) Extend tongue from mouth
3) Place tongue across both terminals simultaneousy, ensuring sufficient coverage

That's how I check 9 volt batteries to tell if they are good.

Just be glad you didn't find any steel wool to shove in your pockets as well! You'd have been stripping your pants off in a hurry.

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Pete, don't knock yourself too bad. I did the same thing a few weeks ago. It was even for my multimeter! I just wasn't going to admit it to anyone!
