Agreed. That's why the EPA establishes CCC levels
"The Criterion Continuous Concentration (CCC) is an estimate of the highest concentration of a material in surface water to which an aquatic community can be exposed indefinitely without resulting in an unacceptable effect. "
Once something has already been spilled beyond what can be contained, the solution is often to dilute it to a level below the CCC. All I have to offer is my experience both as a Haz-mat Operations plus level firefighter and as a biochemist.
Lord only knows what's coming from the place in Apex. As a facility that handles hazardous waste for disposal from laboratories and industry, they could have varying quantities of almost anything. I'm glad that so far, the public and responders are safe. I can almost guarantee that there are going to be some MAJOR financial and legal implications for this company. They can be held financially responsible for any costs from the emergency response, clean up, long term health issues....man, I sure wouldn't want to be in their CEO's shoes right about now...

I work in the area (US1 and 64) and our building was evacuated at 07:30 when the evacuation area was enlarged. The traffic in the area this morning was terrible also. We're waiting for the evacuation to be lifted so I can go back to work. Wife and dog do not like me being home during the day. Maybe I can sneak into the work shop for a while.

I'm not in the mood to moderate this thread. I have no idea where this discussion of of environmental is going, becuase I can not judge the tone. BUT, if it is going where I think it is going , do it on another website. please

I am glad to read that Steve and Nick are okay and not being affected by the fire and evacuations.

Hope anyone else in the affected area is okay as well.

Sorry, wasn't trying to start any kind of debate. Just trying to explain what the typical practice is and the thought process behind it. The bottom line is that I'm glad everyone is safe thus far.

Sorry, if I came across too strong. There really was no problem. If there was, I would have have just deleted it all. When I said I was in bad mood, I meant becuase I was up all night waiting to see if the wind would shift and we'd have leave.

I only wanted to make sure the thread wouldn't go in the direction of EMS vs. evironmentalist vs. chemist vs. anyone else . The tone of posts is very hard to judge sometimes. The comments made could have gone in a very interesting and civil direction and we'd have split it off. It also could have gone in the direction that I indicated. So I just wanted to wave a caution flag.

So if there is more to be said, say it.

Glad everyone is doing well, looks like a pretty nasty fire.

Point taken, Steve - no worries.
That's what I like best about this site. We can have differences of opinion in a civil, adult way without anyone's noses getting bent out of shape!
