Bad fire in Apex

Hope you members from and around Apex are ok. Read about the big fire and the evacuations on the net this morning.

We've got some members in the Apex area. If you haven't heard, here is a report from the news and observer.

Yep, that's some bad juju.

More than 8000 evacuated already.

The news said if you can see the smoke, evacuate!

Re: Bad fire in Apex

I am actually in SE Cary, near US1 and HWY64. About 3 miles NW of the fire. Definitely heard the explosions last night.

Evacuations just across US 64 from me. Can't see anything outside because of the very low ceiling this AM, with rain.

I believe that Steve C. is far enough west of downtown Apex that he may not be affected, right now.

The LOML was called into work at Wake Med of Cary at about 4:00AM. They evidently have had some admissions.

We continue to watch the TV in hopes that this clorine/toxic cloud disipates!

Heard about this this a.m. They said the evacuations may not yet be over, depending on how the cloud moves....hope everyone is okay.

We are not in the evacuate zone. And now that the wind has shifted, I doubt that we will be. My wife couldn't sleep and she watched the news all night. I slept like a baby

Wow -- "If they choose to come, go ahead and write their names on their foreheads and the names of their next of kin" -- pretty scary. Hope everyone is OK...

Re: Bad fire in Apex

Just got to work after leaving the fire station. We sent a truck last night to help with evacuations and with setting up a perimeter.
It's just too dangerous to fight a fire like this. The rain that started here at 7AM is the first water that has been put on the fire. It's a matter of waiting for it to burn out from a safe distance. From what I've seen and heard from those who were there, Apex FD and PD did an awesome job with the evacuations. No serious injuries have yet been reported.
In a situation like this with a toxic gas cloud, the rain is a double edged sword. On one hand it helps to put the fire out. On the other hand, the high humidity keeps the vapors from dispersing and holds them to the ground. As with any type of environmental contamination, "the solution is dilution". It may be a period of days before folks can return to their homes.

any enviormentalist will argue that dilution is not the solution to any enviormental problem. dilution just spreads the problem.

Re: Bad fire in Apex

Diluting Clorine and HCL enough will not have any ill effects. Simply makes things a little more acidic, but will run its course and even out. Although the environmenalist may argue, its about life safety and well being of the people first and foremost.

Re: Bad fire in Apex

Just checked with my daughter who lives about 3 miles west of the fire location -- she is fine and has not had to evacuate -- but she is packed and ready if she has to leave. Steve Coles and Nick Zappi live close to her, but I doubt they are effected either.
