Does anyone know of a good and reasonably priced electrician in Charlotte or surrounding area? I need to have some work done in my garage for lighting and tools.

Ok....I'll settle for a good electrician. Does anyone know of a good electrician near Charlotte?

Mike,
I'm not a licensed electrician (I do sleep in Courtyard hotels however ) but I did my electrical in my garage shop after some serious research and consultation with a neighbor who is an electrician. The local library had up to date reference books and I did everything but physically connect the breaker to the box and close up all the outlet boxes. I used surface mounted BX 12g wiring for 2, 20amp 220v and 2, 20amp 110v circuits. The neighbor and my future son-in-law's father (former German electrician) who was visiting inspected and approved my work. The German system is very different from ours and the discussion was interesting between the 2 electricians. Even with all the supervision and expert inspection I had a connection short. This was d/t a locking collar being tightend down too much by me on a wire at an outlet box and crimping the armor to the point it cut through the wire...and I did use the red end caps!!! Luckily it was only a 6ft section that needed replacing.
Anyway...check with your neighbors and friends, you may have an electrician close by or a relative of a friend who will exchange advice and an inspection for some woodworking or a few frosty beverages. Surface mounting everything was easy.

I am going to see how many times I can post to my own thread. I was hoping that I would get more than one response although I think the one response I got was spot on and I will most likely try to do the electrical work myself.

Mike,
I'm very much a non-DIYer, but managed to wire my shop. As others suggested, check out the library or purchase a book or two and try something simple first. Of course, at some point you may need an electrician to review your work and make sure you pass inspection.

HTH,
Roger

It does Roger. Thanks. I bought a wiring book from Borders on Sunday night and I guess I'll have a go at it. I have to clean the garage out before I can start running wire so I have a little time to do some research and reading.

sure, you just reminded me that the electrician might actually like to see where the wire is going to be run, I'll never have my shop done
