Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

I think it would depend on your particular flavor of woodworking albeit turning, scroll saw, etc. I'm sure 2 among the favorites would be Popular Woodworking and Fine Woodworking. I can't help with the best place to buy - boss handles that aspect.

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

Woodworking, the sister publication to Popular Woodworking, is a fun read. It's available electronically on-line or at your favorite big box book store.

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

I'm not sure why, but I'm very fond of Fine Woodworking... Other than FWW (No, I Do Not get it for free), I subscribe to Wood, Popular Woodworking, and American Woodworker.

As far as where to get them - I'm not sure there's a better way to save cash on any of them other than to subscribe - And some magazines offer better deals than others.

Hope this helps

I currently subscribe to Wood. I use to also get American woodoworker, but I liked Wood better.

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

As others have said, a lot depends on what you want to do. I love Wood Carving Illustrated, but for obvious reasons it is not for everyone. I have taken others off and on over time and my two favorites were Wood and Popular Woodworking. Some of my favorites from all the mags have been special editions focusing on shops, particularly small shops in my case. I think I learn a lot more seeing jigs and clever work space design than I do from following specific instructions to build a given project. Along that line, ShopNotes is really good. I get all my magazines through school fund raisers; I am not sure if it is the best price, but they are reasonable, help the school and my kids don't have to look at the ceiling when they are collecting forms in class.

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

As Andy mentioned, it depends on what you want to do. There are magazines dedicated to turning, carving, scroll sawing, etc. I get FWW, Woodsmith, and American Woodworker. The latter was a present from my sister. I used to get Shopsmith, but stopped last year as it got repeatative for me.

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

Hey James,

I agree with the others on what you interest are, but like my interest, they change here and there depending on the projects I get into.

I would have to say though for me I like WoodSmith Magazine the best, as they have great plans and are easier to follow here: http://www.woodsmith.com/ and I also like Shop Notes alot and they sometimes have three books for a good price, like $19.95 here: http://www.woodsmithstore.com/index.html & here: http://www.shopnotes.com/

Here is a Sample issue from ShopNotes 52 pages, and you can view each page individually in pdf if you would like to see a bigger better view. Here: http://www.shopnotes.com/issues/sample/01/

And here are some other sites if you just want some plans.

http://www.freewoodworkingplan.com/ This website has many woodworking plans for free.

http://www.workbenchmagazine.com/mai...athroomcabinet this place has some great PDF plans for free others you have to buy.

Hope you find the Magazine you are interested. Let us know what you like when you find it!

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

I used to get several woodworking magazines. After a while they got repetitive. I never follow the plans exactly anyway. I do subscribe to the Fine Woodworking website. Not only can you see the latest issue on line, you have access to their whole archive of past articles. Several videos and extras are also on the site. A great source of information.

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

If you want to get, or already are, into using handtools much then I recommend Popular woodworking as it has about the best balance between hand and power tools that I have found. That being said, I subscribe to alot of magazines and they all have good points.

I get FWW, Pop WW'g and American WW'r. I also have a subscription to Shopsmith that was gift and I'll let it run out.

For the best prices available for these and other mags I've used http://www.magazinepricesearch.com/

Been using them for the past couple of subscriptions/renewals.

Hey I have that one too, and then I got an email to get three and didn't have two of three, the third was Small shop solutions, all three for $20. So I got that as well and then gave it away free on here. SkySharks got it, but I think it wasn't what he was looking for and gave it away?

Anyway, whatcha finding that you like?

Re: WOODWORKING MAGAZINES

I guess my favorites are ShopNotes and Popular Woodworking. I also like the scroll saw magazines. I've gotten them all over the years. I usually will let a subscription run out because, after a while, the articles keep repeating themselves. Then, the magazine willl offer a great subscription deal and I'll start it back up again.
My suggestion would be to keep an eye on Ebay and order bulk, older magazines. You will get a large variety at very cheap prices and and you won't be missing much over getting a subscription. In some ways, I like the really old magazines better. A lot of magazines are now selling CDs with all of their past issues as another option. Also, check with your library. They give away old magazines for free.
