We got these things all over some butterfly bushes my wife had me plant a few years ago. Looks like a baby humming bird but with 6 legs, a craw fish tail, one long straw like thing under it's head. Some have green bodies, others are yellow and black like a bee and some are even red. They dart around the flower bush like a humming bird. My wife and I both thought they were baby humming birds but now I have my doubts... strangest things I ever saw. Here's a picture of a green bodied one I snapped after it rained, anyone know what it is? They are hard to photograph because they dart around but I'll try and get some pictures of different ones tomorrow afternoon.

I am just guess Jeff but my guess is a humming bird - there are many types of HB's and I believe that this is one
North Carolina Ruby-throated, Rufous, Green Violet-ear, Calliope, Green-breasted Mango.
Then again I don't know

Pretty sure I found what they are, they are actually moths named hummingbird clearwing moths . Here's a link I found, kind of interesting http://mdc.mo.gov/conmag/2001/06/10.htm
I guess I don't need to call the eye doctor after all |

Cool thanks for that info. I see them all the time around our Lantana. I have always wondered what they were. I assumed that a Hummingbird cross-bred with a moth that was related to a Crawdad. Shows what I know

Yep, they are moths. They are common in my yard, been observing them for almost 20 years. IIRC they are the only moth that is normally active during daylight hours.
And they are way cool

Been seeing these things for years and never knew what they were. Never been able to get very close to one long enough to get a real good look at it either. Thanks for the info here. |

Sorry to revive an old thread but I just found out something quite fascinating. I had some Tomato Hornworms Manduca quinquemaculata on my Tomato plants. As I was picking them off and feeding them to the chicken I noticed that they all had something on their backs. That lead me to do a little research. The things on their backs were parasitic Braconid Wasp larva Cotesia congregatus. I should have left the Hornworms alone as they were already getting their butts kicked. But the most interesting thing and what relates to this thread is that the Hummingbird Moths spoke about ITT, are the adult form of the Tomato Hornworm.
I have learned something today, it's a good day
