The new woodshop is soon to be dried in, and I'll be able to start bringing in equipment to replace that which was toasted during the "Equipment BBQ" last June.

Towards that end, I'm planning to make a trip up to Grizzly's Muncy, PA warehouse in order to save myself some major freight $.

The date is still to be determined; most likely the second or third week of January. I'm not sure of the day of the week, but am considering traveling up on a Friday with a return on either Saturday or Sunday. Weather will play a factor in the ultimate travel date, as I'll be bringing back around 10,000 lbs of equipment and that means that I'll have to take a flatbed as opposed to an enclosed trailer.

If you've never been to one of Grizzly's showrooms, it's worth a trip. I've been to their Springfield, MO and Muncy PA showrooms, and the amount of equipment on display is simply staggering.

If anybody would like to ride along, send me a PM.

Scott,

I've made the trip to Muncy several times and it is usually costly (and indeed it is impressive). But you might want to very strongly consider pre-ordering everything before 1/1/09 if you can as new prices will take effect. The new 2009 catalog has been sent out (I do not have mine yet) and according to several posts over on SMC, the price increases are 10-15%. Earlier this fall, the President of Grizzly posted that there would be a price increase, so it is not a complete surprise, just imminent.

Re: Upcoming trip to Grizzly in Muncy, PA

Rob, we're on the same wavelength. The folks at Grizzly advised me (and reminded me) several times about the impending price increase. They've taken a big financial hit this year by absorbing most of the cost increases themselves, instead of passing them along to the customer. Pretty good customer focus, if you ask me.

I've been doing a balancing act between getting the shop dried in and ordering the equipment before the price goes up. I think that I've drawn this one out about as far as I can!

Tomorrow I'm writing a check and overnighting it to Muncy, so that I can get the '08 prices. They will hold the equipment for me in their warehouse until I can get there and pick it up.

Scott

ps - my '09 catalogs arrived today.

Excellent! I knew you were replacing many of your key tools, so I wanted to be sure you were aware of the price increases. My favorite toy store... Wait until you see their new distribution warehouse located just west of the tent sale site -- it is almost as big as the main building. Take some pics while you are there as folks here won't believe how cool the place is! I was there in late July and bought my G0490X jointer. BTW, what all are you getting?

Hmmm, tempting. Let me check my schedule. I'd love to go drool over some cast iron and get it all rusty.

I can see that....Bas is drooling, his cast iron rust alarm goes off and he screeches like a banshee, he goes back to drooling, and then he screechin' again. It's a vicious circle...I would love to see it

Honestly Honey, that will cost around $100 $150 $200, and I need a few more tools.

Re: Upcoming trip to Grizzly in Muncy, PA

Dave - Bas: <grin>

Bas / DaveO: Y'all are more than welcome to travel along. The showroom is worthy of several hours of drooling, and they have a demo area set up in one corner that is especially cool!

Rob, here's the shopping list of the big ticket items that will be following me home:

G0504 16" horizontal resaw bandsaw
G1276 6 x 48 / 12" disc sander (slow speed)
G0605X 12" extreme tablesaw
G0660X 16" combination jointer / Planer
G0513 17" bandsaw
G8622 sliding table / tilting arbor shaper
G1071 spindle sander

and some miscellaneous items such as featherboards, power feeders, drill press, tool boxes, etc. I think that I'm going to spring for one of their workbench kits as well.

I'm also replacing the "Festool Flambe" items (as Bas put it), picking those up from Steve Wall up in Mayodan. The Grizz dust collection system has already been replaced by an Oneida (still in boxes and clogging up the barn), which I'll use on the smaller machines. I've also already lined up a 37" wide belt sander, to replace my fried 15 incher.

Good choices

Scott,

I have the 17" bandsaw and it is great. Wired it for 110V and it still does everything I want it to do. The tension window and blade tracking window are nice features, that I wish I had had before.

The sander is also a nice choice.

Good luck,
Guy

Scott, I can't make the trip up but depending on the timing I might be able to loan you a hand on this end unloading, unpacking and setup.

Scott, I was just thinking the same thing... when this stuff arrives back in NC, Mr. Smith might need a hand or three to help with the unloading... and the assembly... and the de-gunking(is that a word)... and the first cuts... and the beer drinking .... Just let us know, Scott.

Re: Upcoming trip to Grizzly in Muncy, PA

Bas, I think that the HP works out to be 50 if you count the two 1HP power feeders that I also bought...

I upgraded the bandsaw to the G0513X2B - figured that it was worth it in order to get the brake. Unfortunatly, there are not any carbide tipped blades available from Grizzly for a 131" band...

They didn't have the X2B bandsaw in stock in Muncy, so it will ship from Springfield. At least I won't have to worry about a tall crate on the trailer.

I also bought a G0629 52" 3 in 1 sheet metal machine (shear, brake, roll) to replace the one that got toasted.

The horizontal resaw really has me excited. The primary reason that I flew to Atlanta to the IWF show was to see that machine in action, and it did not disappoint. The quality and performance is outstanding - especially as compared with a vertical resaw bandsaw.

Scott and Bob - thanks for the offer - I will definitely keep that in mind (especially the degreasing!). Gee, I wonder if we could con GeorgeL into bringing his polishing equipment over here...

Alex's pen is definitely getting a workout!!! I must confess though, my hand shook a bit when I wrote that check today! Of course, if I had Travis's money it wouldn't be a big deal; an amount like that is probably just "walking around" money to him.

Sorry, that doesn't count. That's like including the wattage for the lights in the shop. Only allowed if you have machines that (a) don't require 3-phase power (b) can be transported in an ordinary vehicle

Yeah, the first one you had listed was sort of wimpy. I mean, don't get me wrong, it dwarfs anything I have in the shop, but it was sort of smallish compared to the rest.

Be prepared to make a LOT of new friends with that one

Re: Upcoming trip to Grizzly in Muncy, PA

I just recieved my 2009 cataloq and most of the machines have gone up $100 on average for what I glanced over. I just ordered the 17" band saw myself, the G0513X2 is the one on its way to me. I wish I could go see the showroom. I have heard that it is just amazing to see their setup. I think I would have to wear a bib because I would most likely be drooling. Steve
