I am attempting to submit a photo for the calendar cover. I shot a photo with the correct resolution ... it was easy after buying a new camera. But now I can not seem to figure out how to superimpose the North Carolina Woodworker logo into the photo. Any insight would be appreciated. phil

I am using Google Picasa 3, seems easy to use. Is there something better and where do I find a high resolution copy of the North Carolina Woodworker logo

Re: Old dog needs new trick

Phil,

I have Picasa 3 on my computer but I don't use it. I don't believe Picasa supports layers, which I believe you need. Adding the North Carolina Woodworker logo (click here for a link) is quite simple using a program like PhotoShop Elements. You simply open your photo and the logo. Copy the logo and paste it onto your photo. It will be added to your photo on a seperate layer so you can move, resize, and edit it without affecting your original photo. I'm sure you can find a graphic editing program on the net that you can download for free that will support layers.

You may want to look at paint.net. Powerful, no charge to use. Paint.net supports layers. Don't ask me how they work, I've managed to use layers twice and both times it was more by accident than by design

Re: Old dog needs new trick

Phil - As Bas said, Paint.net will work for you. I just downloaded and tried it. It's a little difficult to explain in a short post but I'll give it a try. Once you have downloaded Paint.net AND copied the North Carolina Woodworker logo onto your hard drive:

1. Open Paint.net
2. Click File/Open and open your proposed North Carolina Woodworker calendar cover.
3. Click File/Open and open the North Carolina Woodworker Logo.
4. With the logo on the screen, select it (Ctrl-A) and copy it (Ctrl - C)
5. On the upper right hand corner of the screen you should see two small icons, one showing your cover and the other showing the logo. Click on the icon of your calendar page. It should open on the main screen.
6. On the top left of the screen, click Edit/Paste In to New Layer. The North Carolina Woodworker logo should now appear onto your calendar page. Move it where ever you want using the mouse. Click and drag on one of the corners of the dashed box that surrounds the logo to resize it.
7. To eliminate the off-white background of the logo, click the Tools menu on the top left of the screen. Select "Magic Wand". Using the mouse, click on a white area of the logo and press Delete. Repeat until all of the white areas have been made transparent.
8. When you're happy with the result, click File/Save. Type in a new name for your cover and click the Save button. You're done.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck in the contest.

Ernie

Re: Old dog needs new trick

Phil,

I did this for a living in a previous life and still have most of the hardware and software. If you can't get the result that you want, I think I can help you.

All I need are the input photos or sources (digital high resolution) and maybe a sketch of what the end result should look like (logo placement, etc.).

Charley

Thanks for the offer but I did my best last night and submitted a couple of photos. I had the idea that I could merge the logo into the water and have it rippling like waves. After a few hours I gave up. Next time maybe we could get together. Thanks phil

Re: Old dog needs new trick

Charley,

You can do that, you need a higher end photo manipulation software like Photoshop. And the filters in there to create the ripple effect on the logo. Then merge the logo art with some percentage of transparency to make it look like the logo is in the water instead of pasted over it.
