A new fitness program I think I can do! For those of us getting on in years and needing a bit of exercise, I thought I might let you, my friends, in on a little secret I've found for building my arm and shoulder muscles. You might wish to adopt this regimen - three days a week or so. I started by standing outside, behind the house, and with a 5-lb. potato sack in each hand, extending my arms straight out to my sides and holding them there as long as I could.
After a few weeks, I moved up to 10-lb. potato sacks, then 50-lb. potato sacks, and finally 100-lb. potato sacks. Finally I got to where I could lift a 100-lb. potato sack in each hand and hold my arms straight out for more than a full minute. Next, I started putting a few potatoes in the sacks, but I would caution you not to over do it at this level.

I thought I'd start light, with one a day. I do the first half when I get out of bed. Then the other half when I go to bed.

Take a 12 oz adult beverage in your right hand, then using left hand, pop the top. Raise to lips, repeatedly, removing part of the weight each time. When can is empty, get another and repeat. Six sets of repetitions are generally enough per day. |

I have to admit, I didn't read all the way to the end on the first go around. After the lifting 100 lb bags out and holding them for a minute, I thought that you were the strongest person I've ever met. After that I read the replies and thought, "how insensitive can people be?"
Then I read all the way till the end and got the joke.
This is a true story, something similar to that. I used to know a guy that had really big arms. He couldn't afford a bench and weights or a gym membership, so he got a 2"x10", drilled a hole in the middle of it, got a really big rope, tied a knot wider than the hole on one side, then he got a dowel rod and tied the other end of the rope to that. He would stand on the 2"x10" and pull up on the dowel rod until his biceps failed. Repeat the process.
Moral of the story: you can get great exercise using simple things that you have around the house. Do a couple of curls while carrying those paint cans in, don't complain if you're up on an extension ladder and you have to climb down and back up to get that hammer that you just dropped. Pick up the pace when you go up the steps. Take a FULL handful of wet clothes out of the washer and put them into the dryer. Lost the remote? Pick that couch up and see if its under there. Carry two boxes instead of one. Yes, you can get all of those groceries in one trip. Etc, etc.....

He still used to old methods and cut his sheets with 18" Bull Snips -- he could cut straight across a 16 ga. sheet with one hand (1/16" thick). I also watched him cut 2-inch wide 11 gauge hanger strap (1/8" thick) with the same snips. And once, at a picnic where we shared burgers and beers, I watched in awe as he popped the top on a can of beer -- no big deal? -- that was in the days of steel cans that needed a "church key" to open. You would not want to arm wrestlt this guy!

Next time you drive by the parking lot of a gym, notice how everyone is trying to park as close as possible to the entrance! Granted, if it's raining, there's an excuse, but any other day...
