What did you think?
Pick up any good deals?

I just picked up the usual sandpaper, glue, TimberWolf bandsaw Blade and set of Soft Sanders.

Kyle had quite a bit of wood and seems to have had a pretty good show.

Re: Hickory Extravaganza?

This was my first, and for sure not the last time I attend this show!

What fun. I love walking up to strangers, saying hi, then finding out we've been exchanging posts on the forum for years!

The North Carolina Woodworker booth was a fun place. Hanging out and seeing the Demos was lot of fun. Some really amazing pieces on display too. While I didn't touch the Raffle Drill press, you'd find my fingerprints on some of those hand planes......

My mind reels at all the nifty tools and wood that was at the show.

I'll also mention the apples. There were cases of free apples there. I ate seven, and discovered the consequences the next day

A quick nod to our caravan. Bobcat Bob drove (not in a bobcat though) and hauled DavidF, Pete301, Splint Eastwood and myself. The highlight of the trip had to be the rest stop on the drive up. I took home a sample, and indeed, the toilet paper is equivalent to 36 grid sand paper

Thanks to all who put the show together and represented us so well!

Jim

As I understand it, he was on the diagonally opposite side of the room from North Carolina Woodworker.

Re: Hickory Extravaganza?

I had a fun day, the trip was fun with lots of laughs with our carpool. I picked up a Worksharp 3000 as I planned, but had to shell out for the Wide blade attachment. Very disappointed at the "deal" $20 off is not really a steal, especially when the "show price" for the wide blade attachment was actually $2 more than the Highland Hardware's normal catalogue price! Once I read that over the weekend I felt a bit ripped off... The way you pick the Klingspor stuff up and then take it to the check out to pay removes the chance to "negotiate" with anybody over the price, you just pay what's stored in the computer. It would be nice to have the opportunity to do some deals, such as "ok, if I buy two of these, what's your best price" etc. This should be part of a trade show as far as I am concerned.
Not sure whether I would go again, or at least not for purchasing anything, web prices are generally the same if not better. Although it's always nice to meet the gang for a chat.

Re: Hickory Extravaganza?

I didn't purchase alot - low on funds ya know - anyway I picked up a bottle of Med CA for around 6 bucks and a set of Micro Mesh sanding pads for 9 bucks saved about 10 on them but kind of disappointed in the size of the pads - timf67 and I did a little horse trading and he had an eye on one of my scroll saw pieces and I seen where he had an extra one of these

He brought it up to the show and we swapped there

Well I stopped in and picked up some more jet clamps. I just can't buy enough clamps

Funny story I just got yelled at this morning. I forgot to get any apples buy my dad got one and saved it for my wife.. (Strike 1). She took it to work this morning and called me and said they were great and she wanted more and I told them they had cases of them (Strike 2). She asked how much they were selling them for and then I told her they were free to eat (STRIKE 3). Glad she was at work so I didn''t have to duck

Overall I enjoyed it buy my dad enjoyed it more I think. He was looking at the turners and then came back and started "looking" at my lathe.. He may be getting the itch.

Re: Hickory Extravaganza?

I thought that was Kyle in the back corner as i thought i recognized the curly redwood ; ). I didn't see any real good deals other than the sandpaper but that didn't stop me. I bought a earlex lvhp sprayer, a frued 3 1/4 router, micromesh abrasive starter set, sandpaper, and a present for my dad that i won't disclose as he may lurk.

Similar problem here. I didn't bring any home and made the mistake of mentioning them. I got "the look" and tried to bail out by saying they didn't look very good. The response was "well they'd still be good for baking!" So I had a short stay in the doghouse but all is well now.

Re: Hickory Extravaganza?

I enjoyed meeting several forum members, TracyP, McRabbet, Partman, ScottM, Froglips, Pete and Phillip (PChristy). That was the best part of the show for me.
I did pickup a crown roughing gouge, but Tina was with me so no new Unisaw went home with me.

Ken, brother I told you that all of us would be glad to load that uni up for ya - we had plenty of pickups there that would have loved to have had it sitting on the back of it

I forgot to ask if they gave you a hard time leaving with that tool and not having a receipt? I didn't even think about it until I tried to leave with my purchases and was frisked at the door...
