I might have the opportunity to pick up some land near Blowing Rock and maybe build a vacation/future home.

Don't know anything about the area, wondered if anyone had any insights? Looking for country, near mountains, not TOO far away from civilization, etc.

Thanks
Dan

Stayed at Chetola a couple of times. The village is picturesque and very close to ASU.

Re: Blowing Rock area?

Golf, skiing (snow), and antique/craft shops are abundant. Oh yeah, don't forget to include all the natural wonders of the mountains

Re: Blowing Rock area?

I had a business partner from Teaberry Creek, which is near that area.
He told tales of folks who sold land, but still considered it theirs (since it had been in the family for so long.) Mysterious fires happened to the absent owner's nearly finished homes. The same thing happened to a B&B I know of near Ashville.
My recent experience, (as contrasted with a friend's trials in N. Ga. and my ex-father-in-law's baptism in Highlands, NC) is that it was best to buy a place already built and remodel it myself. Unless you plan to be your own very cautious and patient on-site builder, you could get a costly education. In the mountains, they can see you coming from pretty far off.
The mountains are great. Living there is great. Doing business in the mountains is different.
There is also a Condo development on a mountaintop in the Blowing Rock area which should be avoided.

Re: Blowing Rock area?

Dan,
I grew-up just north of there and my brother is a General Contractor up there. He builds mostly log, log veneer, and wood sided frame houses. If you have any specific questions about the area let me know and if I don't know the answer I'll try to get the answer for you.
Rob

Re: Blowing Rock area?

Before the real estate slide, Blowing Rock/Boone were one of the fastest growing areas in the state. 'Halfbacks*' love it. If you build or remodel your own place, be careful of the local Building Inspector. My sister remodeled a vacation home for an attorney in B.R. She ordered the windows for the project from Blue BORG in N. Wilkesboro and had nothing but problems because the windows must meet a wind load certification greater than is normally sold by the BORG or required by NC Building Code. She got them to admit the mistake, but it was very expensive to correct it.
I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could make a living there. By son is an Appalachian Alum ('06 1/2) & going to see him regularly was a big factor in our appreciation of the entire area.
* Halfback - n. a native of the U.S. north of the Mason - Dixon Line that has moved to Florida for a period and then decided it was too hot, so they moved halfway back up north. Terrible drivers once they achieve octogenarian status.
