Kayak build part 2

It has been a busy week, but I did find time to pick up the plywood and build the boxbeam spline that will hold the stations cut out last weekend.


First step in my 12x24' shed...er..shop is to move things around so there is infeed and outfeed space for a full sheet of plywood. After checking my plans, I ripped four 2" and four 2 1/2" x 8' pieces from the sheet of 3/4 ply. The extra 1/16" due to the undersized ply actually 23/32" will come in handy when the stations are aligned on the spline. I glued and stapled these together using a string line to assure straightness, and staggering the butt joints for strength. I ended up with a 2x4" 13'6" boxbeam.


I realized how full my shop is when this was assembled. Since I built my kayak I have added a drill press, 19" bandsaw, and full size lathe to my small shop. I am glad this kayak is only 15'6" long and not 18'. I wonder if my wife would mind if I stored some tools in the house during this project.
