The lathe I am getting does not have the faceplate with it, so I would like to either make one or buy one...

Any advice?

Thanks

Hi all,
I have the famous, perhaps infamous, HF 34706 lathe and besides all the levers stripping out and the banjo busting, it as at least given me a chance to start to learn hollow forms and bowl turning. What I wanted to know is if anyone has replaced the motor on this lathe. I don't know if mine is actually burned out or not working up to snuff but it gets very hot and will start bogging down when I am not really pressing it that hard after I have been working with it for a while.

Hi all,
I have the famous, perhaps infamous, HF 34706 lathe and besides all the levers stripping out and the banjo busting, it as at least given me a chance to start to learn hollow forms and bowl turning. What I wanted to know is if anyone has replaced the motor on this lathe. I don't know if mine is actually burned out or not working up to snuff but it gets very hot and will start bogging down when I am not really pressing it that hard after I have been working with it for a while.

I have been back and forth so many times to HF exchanging parts that I really don't want to exchange the motor for another of the same that will either be as weak as the one I have now or become so after a few weeks of using it. It looks like it would not be that difficult to rig up another motor as I have a few lying around here and even if I have to buy one it would be worth it to me because I am in no position to buy another lathe right now. Has anyone out there done this? It looks like a 5/8" arbor and the original motor appears to measure 5.5" by 5.5". Does anyone know if that is a standard motor size? I looked all over for a frame or size indicator but there is nothing on it.

The motor it comes shows 3/4 hp but I assume that is an exaggerated claim. I know that I should not be able to slow it down as easily as I can once it gets hot. And it gets HOT! Does anyone know what the rpm of the original motor is. As I mentioned I cannot see anything on the motor itself which somehow does not surprise me.

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee
